Your RAF Station –Grimsetter – is in Orkney close to the town of Kirkwall and the location is shown on this map.
RAF Grimsetter was planned for use as a fighter station and was also home to a Fighter Sector HQ. initially this important HQ was located in tents on the airfield site! Over a period of time the Station was home to three Spitfire squadrons. The RAF units moved on to other airfields and the Fleet Air Arm took over Grimsetter as HMS Robin in 1943. The Fleet Airm Arm squadrons were also fighter units with Sea Hurricanes, Seafires, Widcats, Hellcats and Corsairs and were primarily tasked with the air defence of the Fleet Anchorage at Scapa Flow.
After the end of the war the station closed down. Today RAF Grimsetter/HMS Robin is Kirkwall Airport and provides the main airport for Orkney.
